I chose to be on the Board at this time because I was excited by the new era of leadership under Dan Fox, our principal. I wanted to support the school and its administration as it entered this new era and to be a contributing member to the school. More personally, I have been so grateful for the education and the community that my son, Andrew, has received from the school and its staff and teachers. Andrew is a "relational" learner, and at September High School, he is in relationship with each and every one of his teachers, the staff, and the other students. There is no place to hide! He is now a senior, and has been here for most of his freshman year. This school has consistently been a safe and supportive, and sometimes necessarily challenging, place for Andrew. Because he is not a very academically motivated student, the staff has had to look for what does motivate Andrew and what matters to him. As a result of this basic philosophy of mutual respect, he shows up to September High School and is a valuable contributing member of the community. Being a member of the Board, and now President, gives me the opportunity to serve the School and to contribute to making this kind of educational opportunity available to all teenagers in our community who want and need what September High School has to offer.

I chose to be on the board at September High School after seeing the remarkable change in my son's academic progress and general attitude about school. Shortly after joining the September High School community, he stated that he felt "welcome" at this school and actually enjoyed going to school each day. I'm grateful that he has a place where he can excel and enjoy his high school years.

My son Christopher graduated in June 2007 from September High School and derived great benefit from his experience there. I want to support the excellent work September High School does for students in the Boulder area. I get very excited about the prospect that the techniques used by the faculty and administrators could potentially be shared in other communities that do not have a similar resource.

I wanted to volunteer in an educational setting that served younger members of the larger community since I do not have children. I also support September High School's vision and feel that it is a vital institution in the Boulder Community by educating the young adults who are interested in a creative, supportive and academic environment.

I joined the Board of September High School shortly after my son started attending, and seeing firsthand what an amazing school it is. I am continually impressed by the passion, respect, and concern the teachers and staff share with the students on a daily basis. My decision to join the Board was fueled by a desire to support the exciting changes taking place at the school and to help ensure that September High School continues to be an important asset to our community.

Based on my daughter Taylor's experience at SHS, which I discovered was similar to that of many other SHS students, I feel the school provides an important alternative to the traditional high school environment and curriculum. SHS reenergizes these bright, passionate students who otherwise struggle in a larger, less personal school setting. My intention as a Board member is to help SHS remain a healthy, sustainable and exciting academic alternative in the Boulder community.
